Growing Methods

Manila clams grow naturally in the waters of the Salish Sea.  However, the Squaxin Island Department of Natural Resources enhances beaches with clam seed to increase populations. Nets are used to protect clams from predators.  The nets are cleaned periodically to remove logs and other aquatic debris, such as kelp and seaweed.  While protected, the clams naturally burrow into the substrate and grow until they are ready for harvest.
